Araniella displicata (Hentz, 1847)
sixspotted orbweaver
FAMILY: ARANEIDAE Simon, 1895
Genus: Araniella Chamberlin & Ivie, 1942
Species: Araniella displicata (Hentz, 1847)
Author of this page: Shorthouse, David P. (Page complete and awaiting review)
General Comments: The possession of three (rarely four) pairs of small black spots on the abdominal dorsum is somewhat diagnostic for this species (Sacher, 1990).This species has a widespread range and has been collected from Alaska to Newfoundland and Labrador, south to California, Arizona, and North Carolina, as well as throughout Europe and Asia. Individuals of A. displicata are often found in low shrubs and deciduous trees such as apple, birch, maple, alder, and hawthorn, and rarely in conifers (Dondale et al., 2003). Individuals are commonly parasitized (Blanke, 1982) perhaps because they sit in their webs during the daylight. The web is often made across a single leaf.
