Web Services

Obtain a key from the Database Manager (dshorthouse(at)eol.org) for the following XML web services via REST. For background on Life Science Identifiers (LSID), visit http://www.ubio.org.

FunctionExplanation
SearchLSID Returns the full, current nomenclature for an LSID as the parameter.
ex. http://www.canadianarachnology.org/xml/SearchLSID/urn:lsid:ubio.org:namebank:2069009/<<key>>
SpeciesDescription Returns material from the species description with current nomenclature for an LSID as the parameter. The following elements are Base64-encoded because they may contain some HTML mark-up: LifeHistory, Habitat, Notes, DescriptionMale, DescriptionFemale
ex. http://www.canadianarachnology.org/xml/SpeciesDescription/urn:lsid:ubio.org:namebank:2069009/<<key>>
References Returns all references with Base64-encoded authors and titles with an LSID as the parameter.

Coordinates Returns the CollectionRecord number and all latitudes and longitudes of collections with an LSID as the parameter.
ex. http://www.canadianarachnology.org/xml/Coordinates/urn:lsid:ubio.org:namebank:2069009/<<key>>
CollectionRecord Returns all data from the collection record with CollectionRecord number as the parameter. The CollectionRecord number is NOT a unique identifier and is best obtained programmatically from the "Coordinates" function. The Notes element is Base64-encoded because it may contain some HTML mark-up.

Other Data Formats

  • Deep linking content: flat text file downloads (contact the database manager)
  • Raw data: provided as gzipped or zipped flat text file, or via DiGIR (contact the database manager)
  • Raw data: freely available Excel or tab-delimited Text files throughout sections of the website
  • Simple GeoRSS data: freely available per species on species pages (look for GeoRSS under all maps)

Nearctic Spider Link it Gadgets

   Individual images and live maps can be pasted into webpages that permit javascript or in forum posts as hard-coded content via customizable gadgets by clicking where found (e.g. HERE). The javascript gadget includes the species' current nomenclature, a link to the species page and, in the case of images like the gadget below, credits the artist/photographer.

Google Gadget

   The Google Gadget shown below includes two randomly generated & hyperlinked species-of-the-day images. The code for this gadget can be pasted into any webpage that permits javascript.
